Nutrition

I have been drawn to studying nutrition with the Institute of Integrative Nutrition for a good few years now.  Realising the importance of a good, balanced diet (and life!) has made me aware of the power that food has over us – emotional eating anyone?! –  and the amount of people out there who aren’t able to manage to eat as well as they perhaps should.  There is such a minefield of information available to us – especially on the internet, where every seemingly-reputable resource seems to conflict in opinions with the rest.   There is so much misinformation out there regarding diet and food, and it’s almost impossible to sift through the junk to find what really works.

And the truth?

Everybody is different.  So why should we be on a quest for a one-size-fits-all solution to nutrition?

One of the things that had me drawn in to IIN (Institute of Integrative Nutrition) over some of the other holistic schools out there was their approach to healthy living versus dieting.  One of their central themes is bioindividuality, meaning that everybody is different biologically, emotionally, unique experiences etc.  Why do people therefore assume that a lifestyle or diet that works for one person will work for them too?

They are also focused on something they call ‘primary food’.  This refers to the other (non-food!) nourishing and sustaining factors in our lives that make us happy – family time, spirituality, a satisfying job and enjoyable physical/recreational activities.  Lack of happiness and things you are passionate about has a huge impact on your health.  One of the key IIN philosophies is “When primary food is balanced and satiated, your life feeds you, making what you actually eat secondary.”  Something I definitely agree with!

Counting down the days!

I have enrolled to start in November, which coincides with when I leave work (=more time to spend on studying!) and finish my YTT course.  I can’t wait to make nutritional support part of my offering! I really want to help others to achieve healthier and happier lives.
